Annual Awards Banquet

It is at this banquet that we honor swimmers, coaches and volunteers  for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Connecticut Swimming.  Nearly four hundred swimmers were recognized for  academic achievement and/or Top 16 swims in each individual event.   Bill Krumm, General Chair, extended special thanks to Peter Boucher and Wendy Jackwin, Banquet Coordinators, for their huge effort and success of this banquet.

Ben Michaelson

It is now 5 consecutive years that the Senior Committee has named Ben Michaelson Swimmer of the Year.  Ben is currently the 3rd ranked American in the 100M Butterfly and holds many NCAA and CSI records. Ben finished 3rd in the 2004 Olympic Trials and recently participated in the World Championships taking a relay gold medal.

Deborah Gruen
Michael Prout, Jr.

Both of these outstanding swimmers were named to the US Paralympic Team and competed in Athens, Greece at the 2004 Paralympic Games. Deb Gruen won a bronze medal in the 100M Breaststroke and Michael Prout won gold and bronze in the 400M Freestyle and 100M Freestyle.

ConocoPhillips Service Award
Bill Repass

For his approximately twenty years of volunteer service to Connecticut Swimming, Bill Repass was awarded USA Swimming's ConocoPhillips  Service Award.  Bill is a CSI referee and nationally certified starter and served on the CSI Board of Directors from 1999 to 2004.

Skip Nitardy

Skip Nitardy is a long-time swimming coach and coached the Darien Piranha Y swim team for over ten years.  Skip continues his coaching career in Maine where he now resides with his family.

Christine Pelham

Christine Pelham is the current head coach of Camel Swim Club out of Connecticut College.  She has coached in CT since 1998 and has produced a zone champion, zone team qualifiers and many Connecticut Top 16 qualifiers.

Scholar Athletes

Each year Connecticut Swimming recognizes those athletes demonstrating high ability in the classroom and in the pool. Connecticut Swimming Scholar-Athletes have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade and have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average as well as competing in designated CSI- sanctioned meets.  This year 68 athletes were named and in addition, 7 of these athletes were named Scholar-Athletes for three consecutive years.  They are:  Michael Baity, Megan Crapster, Jeremy Doernberger, Allison Lenci, Dan Meyer, Vincent Nardone and Clair Nugent.  

USA Swimming has named 14 Connecticut athletes to its 2004 Scholastic All America Team.  USA Swimming recipients must have swum in Sectionals, National Disability Championships, US Open, Open Water National Championships or National Championships and maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA.  Honors go to Theresa Altieri, Philip Baity, Michael Baity, Caitlin Block, Laura Conter, Frisk Driscoll, Deb Gruen, Tina Hughes, Brett Jones, Keenan Koss,  Erin Morrison, Gregory Neville, Alexandria Ukleja and Ashley Ukleja.  

Congratulations to all the 2004 Connecticut and USA Swimming Scholar-Athletes!

Connecticut Swimming is pleased to announce that the 2004 Annual Awards Banquet will be held Sunday November 7, 2004 at the Aqua Turf.  It is at this event that we recognize our athletes, volunteers and coaches for their outstanding performance. 

Selection Criteria:  Invitations are extended to Scholar-Athletes and athletes achieving Connecticut Top 16 times, complied from all the meets in the 2003-2004 short course season and 2004 long course season, in an individual event in the following age groups: 10/U, 11/12, 13/14, 15/16, 17/18 and Senior.  This includes the Open Water Championship mile swim for 11/O athletes.  (Invitations are not based on place finish at a championship meet.)

Invitees: Click here for list of athletes invited to the banquet.  If your name is on the list, please download the Athlete Reservation Packet , print it and mail the forms according to the directions provided.  YOU MUST MAIL IN A RESERVATION FORM AND PAYMENT IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE BANQUET.  Reservation deadline is October 4, 2004.

Club Affiliation:  A swimmer is listed by club that he/she was registered with when an individual Connecticut Top 16 time was achieved.   Please indicate the club you would like to sit with at the banquet on your reservation form. Athletes and their families may sit with any club.
