Open Water
Championship
Connecticut Masters Madison Mile
June 25, 2005 @ the Madison Surf Club
June 30, 2001 marked the first CSI Open Water Championship and now four championships later, the open water swim is going strong and has become a tradition for many CSI clubs. Over 200 CSI athletes, ages 11 to 21 years competed this past weekend and made a fine showing along with nearly the same number of Connecticut Masters swimmers. Dave Parcells, Meet Director, reported, "The 5th Annual Madison Mile was a great success with a record 477 registrants. The weather was hot and sunny and the water was a perfect 67 degrees. The competitors battled a strong current the first half of the swim on a slightly long course." All proceeds from this meet benefited the Shoreline Foundation Summer Camp Scholarships for needy children and Town of Madison Beach & Recreation Department.
A huge thanks to Dave Parcells, Meet Director, who once again took on the mammoth job of running this event. Thanks also to the CSI officials that were there to help both on sand and water: Pam Libertiny, Referee; Peter Boucher; Dave Heller; Rob Morrison and Chris Prue. The face and keen eye behind the camera lens was Barry Silver. Thanks to all volunteers and especially Connecticut Masters.
Only in the Long Island Sound can CSI athletes, officials and coaches jump in the water together and compete in the same race. Finishing the course were coaches: Jason Paige (NCY and committee member of USA Swimming's National Open Water Committee); Dave Fine (NCY); Mike Krajewski (CAT); Marcy MacDonald (LEHY); Kate Bondonna (VSYM); Pete Gonsalves (VSYM) and Chris Kelley (VSYM). Officials include: James Bayles (WYW); Rick and Maria Klutey (RAC); Mary Ann Harmon (OMNI); Sandra Heller (NTSC) and Lori Hartmann (WWRX). This list is incomplete! If we missed you, please email us your name.
Many of the masters athletes have swum notable open water competitions including crossing the English Channel. LEHY coach, Marcy MacDonald, Meet Director Dave Parcells and James Bayles (Official) are some that have swum the English Channel, even more than once. Swimming is truly a life-long sport!
Kristen Frost (SNCO) won the overall women's division and Geoff Rathgeber (SNCO) won the overall men's divison. Joining these fine athletes on the podium are the following:
