Open Water
Championships
Madison Mile
The third-annual Connecticut Open Water Championship was held Saturday June 28th at the Madison Surf Club. This championship was a huge success due to Dave Parcells, Meet Director, and the Connecticut United States Masters which organized and conducted this event. The weather co-operated and over 300 Masters and Connecticut Swimming athletes turned out including a first-time group of 12/U swimmers. The "mini-milers" swam a 500 yard course paralleling the shoreline while the 12-77 year old swimmers swam a one-mile triangular course marked by buoys.
Taking the male and female overall were Ben Michaelson (SNCO) and Kristen Frost (SNCO). Overall masters male and female winners were Heidi Decosta (USMS- East Lyme) and Chris Sullivan (USMS-BRS). Congratulations!!
CSI's well-rounded coaches and officials competed as well. They are: Coaches Rob Collum (VSYM), Mike Dignan (MCC), Chris Kelley (VSYM) and Jeff Schare (WRAT) and officials Tom Casey (SHEL), Maryann Harmon (OMNI), Charlie Lang (SHEL) and Glenn Wells (SHEL). Congratulations!
All proceeds benefit the Shoreline Foundation Summer Camp Scholarships for needy children and Town of Madison Beach & Recreation Department.

Open
Water Swim Championship
By
Steve
Carroll, General Chair
Saturday June 28th is the date of
Connecticut Swimming’s 3rd Annual Open Water Swim Championship.
This championship will held at the Madison Surf Club in Madison, CT
and Connecticut Swimming is
once again pleased to announce that this open water championship will be
conducted in partnership with the United States Masters Swimming
organization. The Connecticut
Masters ran a terrific meet last year, with over 150 CSI athletes
participating, and this year's meet promises
to surpass that.
New this year will be the Mini-Mile for swimmers aged 9-12. This course will be approximately 500 yards long and will run parallel to the shore. Swimmers will be within 50 yards of the shore. To be eligible, 9-12 year olds must have swum the 500Y freestyle in under 10 minutes.
Like
last year, we will again be offering a one-mile open water swim to all
Connecticut Swimming athletes age 11 or older. Awards will be presented
immediately following the competition to the top 3 competitors in each age
group. As well, Top 16 performers in each age group will earn automatic
invitations to our 2003 Annual Awards Banquet November 2, 2003.
For those of you that have not experienced open-water swimming, this is a terrific opportunity to experience your sport in an entirely different manner than you have been accustomed. No lanes, no walls, and no turns. The one-mile course is laid out using a GPS system, and the course is clearly marked and will be patrolled by the Madison Marine Patrol and lifeguards. In-water kayakers will keep swimmers on course and guide them to the finish. The swimmers will be no farther than 200 yards from the shore. Each swimmer will wear an electronic timing chip secured by an ankle bracelet to automatically record his/her time as he/she crosses the finish line.
Swimmers,
let your coaches know that you want to be included in this year’s Open
Water Championships in Madison on June 29th. Disabled athletes
are encourage to enter. Entry applications
should be available through your coach as well as through the CSI
web-site.
Hope to see you all at the Madison Surf Club on Saturday, June 28th.
Special thanks to Dave Parcells, Meet Director and Connecticut Masters for making this event possible to Connecticut swimmers!
Beneficiaries are the Shoreline Foundation Camp Scholarships and Madison Beach and Recreation Department.
