the Record Board at Paralympic National Championships and the Maccabiah Games

Deb Gruen (HNHS), Daniel Madwed (SHKS) and Michael Prout (BEAR) break records!
 

Dan Madwed (SHKS) swam to five gold medals and one bronze to lead the American's in a strong showing at the 17th Maccabiah Games.  The highlight of the meet was Dan's first gold when he swam to the 13th fastest 200 meter fly time in the world (1:58.15) to establish a new Games record.  The time is the second fastest by an American this year following behind only Michael Phelps 1:57 posted at the Santa Clara Invitational recently.  Dan also capped gold in the 100 meter fly, and as a member of the 400 meter medley relay, 400 meter free relay, and 800 meter free relay teams.  His last medal, a bronze came in the 200 meter IM where he swam a lifetime best 2:10.90.   

Also competing in the Macabiah Games in Ramat Gan, Israel were Tina Hughes (GLAS), Sam Laden (CDEV) and Melanie Pascal (BEAR).  Hughes and Pascal both achieved life-time bests in multiple events.

Tina Hughes earned 6 medals for team USA:   Silver in the 100 Free, 1:01.02, Bronze in the 100 Fly, 1:07.08 and the 200 Free, 2:12.38.  In addition to two silver medals in the 400 Free and 400 Medley relays, Tina’s personal favorite swim of the meet was anchoring the 4 x 200 Free, passing Team Israel, helping Team USA to bring home Gold!

Melanie Pascal represented the United States in the youth division of the 17th Maccabiah Games in Israel. At last count, Melanie had won 4 individual gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, in addition to her relay medals. Her individual gold medals came in the 100 meter fly (1:06.03), 200 meter fly (2:23.20), 200 meter I.M. (2:29.63) and 400 meter I.M. (5:11.41). Melanie also won a silver medal in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:28.30, and a bronze medal in the 400 meter free.

Prout, Davis set American Marks

GRESHAM, OREGON (July 17, 2005) – U.S. Paralympics Elite Team Member Michael Prout (BEAR) and National Team Member Toni Davis (New Carrollton, Md.) both set American marks during the final session of the 2005 U.S. Paralympics Swimming National Championships. Prout broke his own standard in the Men’s S9 100 meter Freestyle finishing in 59.16 to better the previous mark he set last year in Athens.  The time also set a new IPC PanAmerican Record. Davis lowered the mark in the Women’s S8 100 meter Butterfly with a time of 1:25.78, surpassing the record she also set last fall at the 2004 Paralympic Games. Over the 3 days of competition a total of 24 American, 18 Pan American, four European, six FESPIC, and six World records were set.

Deborah Gruen (HNHS) broke an American record in the 200 meter Butterfly and broke a Pan American and American record in the the 200 meter Breaststroke.

In addition, Mary-Christine Beck (CDEV) qualified and competed in the U.S. Paralympic Nationals.
