Annual Awards Banquet

Swimmers, coaches and volunteers were honored for their outstanding achievements and contributions at the Annual Awards Banquet, held November 5th at the Aqua Turf.    Over 400 athletes were recognized for academic achievement and/or Top 16 swims, including open water.  Jeff Gray, General Chair, and the Board of Directors, extend special thanks to Peter Boucher, Wendy Jackwin and Sue Husta. It is because of their volunteer efforts that the awards banquet was a success.

Swimmer of the Year

Daniel Madwed

Dan Madwed was named Swimmer of the Year, for the second consecutive year by the Senior Committee. This award is given annually to the highest-ranked CSI athlete. For the 2006-2007 season, Daniel was ranked 23rd in the world and was the 3rd fastest American in the 200 meter Butterfly. Dan is a member of the 2007 USA Swimming World Games Team and the National B Team. 

Adapted Swimmer of the Year

Deb Gruen

World-Record holder, Deborah Gruen, was named the Adapted Athlete of the Year. Deb broke 2 world-records this past July at the US Paralympic Nationals in the 200 meter Breaststroke and 1500 meter Freestyle. A 2004 Paralympian, Deb is a current member of the US Paralympic National Team.and was named to the IPC Swimming World Championship Team.

ConocoPhillips Service Award

Susan Lecza

USA Swimming's highest award to a volunteer was presented to Susan Lecza by CSI Board of Directors for her years of service to CT Swimming. Barry Silver presented the award. "Sue grew up swimming in CT from age 7 through college, and has given back to the sport at every opportunity, as an assistant coach in her 19th season with the Branford Stingrays and now also at Branford High. Sue is a Certified Public Accountant, and she has since 1999 brought her considerable professional skills to Connecticut Swimming’s Board as our volunteer Treasurer." More.....

Senior Coach of the Year

Rick Lewis

Presented by Jr Coach Representative, Dan Zeek: "Rick has coached senior level swimmers to Olympic trials and to top 5 swims in the USA. Rick is currently the Head Coach for the Stamford Sharks and has been involved in CT swimming for many years and serves as Program Development Committee Chair for Connecticut Swimming Board of Directors."

Age Group Coach of the Year

Dave Reilly

Presented by Jr Coach Representative, Dan Zeek: "Dave has been coaching at the Woodbridge Aquatic Club for 5 five years and has built a strong age group program. This was apparent at the 2006 LCM age group meets. Dave has been coaching for many years and currently has one US Open qualifier.

Scholar Athletes

Each year Connecticut Swimming recognizes those athletes demonstrating high ability in the classroom and in the pool. Connecticut Swimming Scholar-Athletes have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade and have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average as well as competing in designated CSI-sanctioned meets.  This year 91 athletes were named and 9 of these athletes were named Scholar-Athletes for three consecutive years. Additionally, athletes competing in
National Disability Championships, Open Water National Championships, Summer Speedo Champions Series (summer sectionals), ConocoPhillips Nationals, Junior Swimming Championships, U.S. Open, Speedo Champions Series (spring sectionals), and Spring Championships may apply for USA Swimming's Scholastic All-America Team..
